Nestled 90 minutes north of Manhattan, within the verdant embrace of the Catskills, there lies a place both stunning and full of cinematic intrigue —The Mod House. A retreat and event space of considerable legend, this 4,200 square foot mountainous monument to mid-century modern design first came to life in 1959 at the hands of a devoted disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright. Originally conceived as the original architect’s piece de resistance among other noteworthy properties, it was also his own home and playhouse for the 1960s. It was later inhabited for decades by a cadre of eccentric characters and socialites.
In 2019, the house underwent a renaissance—reimagined as a whimsical micro-resort and cavernous private jazz club by and for its latest madcap conservator and those souls seeking connection and immersive performances. Today The Mod House stands as a masterwork of retro-futurism: entirely original in its finest architectural details, peppered with perfectly-placed ephemera, period furniture, and original art, yet electrified entirely by the sun’s rays.
The house is a curious amalgam of past and future, where every corner has a story to tell and many yet to be written. Inside, four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms with floor to ceiling windows - 46 in all - are arranged in an open-plan layout that connects the interior with nature, while a massive speakeasy on the ground floor whispers of salons, historic performances, and glorious affairs.
The house sprawls across more than three acres of secluded, wooded land—a private, well-appointed haven for creative retreats and intimate weddings.
Key Features:
A vast, flat grassy lawn perfect for everything from weddings and outdoor sports to yoga classes or simply sunbathing with a good book.
A 2200-square-foot speakeasy, a performance space, and a dance floor, ideal for events that demand a touch of intrigue and glamour.
A long, winding driveway that can accommodate dozens of vehicles or large production crews—no need to worry about the logistics of your grand plans.
Just five minutes from the charming town of Ellenville, with its eclectic mix of restaurants, vintage shops, bakeries, and a wine shop that would satisfy any connoisseur. Only 15 minutes from the bohemian haven of Mountaindale.
Entirely powered by solar energy, the house is a marvel of eco-consciousness, with floor-to-ceiling windows that dissolve the boundary between indoors and the abundant natural beauty outside.
A massive open kitchen that’s as much a social space as a functional one—ideal for gatherings that require both style and substance.
